Don’s Place

Last weekend, RC and I were treated to a pampered visit to Don’s getaway (or Robertson’s Roost as I call it). This is a wonderful patch of heaven on earth located in Gonzales County, TX. This area has a rich history with many settlements of native tribes including the Karankawa among others that migrated into the area in the 14th century. The Comanche and Waco tribes moved into the area later in the 19th century.

The terrain is gently sloping with the buildings placed on the higher ground. The soil is sandy and rocky, presenting a challenge to find those plants that will thrive in this habitat. But, there are many native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses that call this place home and lend their beauty to the landscape.

The many rocks in the area have been employed for several uses, including walls and planters like this one.

The wildlife in the area is diverse and plentiful. I was especially thrilled to see all of the birds in and around the area. There are Eastern Bluebirds using the nest boxes and many species of birds visit the ponds, including hawks looking for a tasty dinner.

Some of the things I saw are in this gallery …
