Astrophotography – April 2016

Astrophotography is for night owls. I’m an early bird, not a night owl, but I signed up for a Jason Weingart astrophotography workshop held in the Terlingua/Big Bend area. Seeing the Milky Way rise up in the night sky is reward enough for staying up all night. In mid April, it didn’t rise until 2 am.

We started the workshop with drives to several places in the area – the Marfa Lights, Prada, the old Stardust Motel sign and an old gas station. We practiced lighting using a fill light to minimize harsh shadows at the gas station. It was a good lesson and one I will try again. I did take a bit of liberty with the final image and add a tad more interesting sky.

The sky at Prada was really boring, so I went overboard on that one, but it was fun.

The first stop on the night we stayed up for the Milky Way was Santa Elena Canyon. I want to go back to this spot with a good, strong light to light up the canyon walls.

And, then, finally, the Milky Way – at Sotol Vista, in the roadway, with a tent and a zoom blur. It was a beautiful sight and I didn’t do it justice.

  1. Great shots, Patti. You did do justice to the Milky Way. Way to go!!

    • Patti says:

Thanks, Kathy. It looks so incredible in person, as you know. Hopefully we will get some good shots of the Milky Way in August – with some Perseid meteors zipping through the scene!

Amen! You absolutely did do justice to the Milky Way! Stunning! The “Milky Way at Sotol Vista” knocks my socks off!

Wow….it must have been hard to take your eyes off that sky full of milky stars! That has to be an awesome (in the literal sense of the word) sight! You captured it so beautifully.

    • Patti says:

Thanks, Mary. It is! I continue to be awestruck whenever I see our galaxy stretching across the sky. Amazing!

    Hey Patti,

I would of love to join you all in August but Kathy Clark said no to me. My wife and I celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary and Kathy suggested for me to stay home. LOL!

You all have fun and hopefully get together next time.

    • Patti says:

Oh, it would have been so wonderful to see you and shoot with you again, Juan! But, I do agree. You wouldn’t want to be on one of these trips while on your anniversary. There is no time for much more than a quick nap during the day and a few hours of sleep at night. Your wife would not be too happy! I do hope we will see you again on another trip soon.
